Self-Compassion and healing affirmations for MS wellness
A big part of my women’s MS support group, The MS Stage, is about naming your symptoms. My left leg is called Roxy, and I talk with her so she can work as well as possible for me. Once you’ve come to terms with your MS diagnosis and named your symptoms, it becomes possible to create a healthier relationship with them.
Having compassion and gratitude for your body and your symptoms can make living with an MS diagnosis much easier. When you see your symptoms as a friend you can adore them and give them what they need.
It is crucial when you are dealing with stubborn symptoms to talk to them. Ask them what they need from you and why they are showing up. What messages do they have for you?
Self compassion can help you befriend your symptoms
Whether you are dealing with anxiety, fear, incontinence, foot drop, or one (or more) of the dozens of other MS symptoms, naming your symptoms is important. It’s actually one of the most important tools of The MS Stage Method. When your symptoms have names and you get to know them and why they are here for you, you can start to befriend them.
The meaning of compassion is literally “to suffer together.” Compassion offers the possibility of responding to suffering with understanding, patience, and kindness rather than fear and anger. Compassion is the ability to feel for another living being.
So what if you began to have compassion for your body and your symptoms? Couldn’t you then shift your relationship with them and see them in a new way?
You can learn how to be grateful for the messages that MS and your symptoms are there to teach you and show you. You can do this by having gratitude towards your body first thing in the morning and also by regularly practicing MS healing meditations on the journey that your body and soul want to go on. Then you can dance with the emotions to let them go. Seriously, put on a song that brings you joy and move your body like no one is watching, or join my MS healing group and feel the profound experience of being witnessed in a safe and supportive space.
Students in my MS online program learn how to name their worst symptom and begin to dialogue with them. This is your first step to clarity around why your symptoms showed up and what they are here to teach you. Once you understand more about their character, then you can begin to have a friendly relationship with them.
Befriending your symptoms is the first step to self-healing
Recently my friend’s husband asked me to offer some words of encouragement to her as she was dealing with a devastating cancer diagnosis and the aftermath of a major surgery and treatments. I sat down to meditate on what I wanted to say and what I could offer her.
I came up with a list of things but the one that stood out the most was something we could all take to heart:
Take the doctor’s appointments as information you can use to heal YOURSELF, NOT as facts that whatever the doctor predicts must come to pass. Medical professionals are not God, and they don’t have a crystal ball. You have the power to use healing arts for MS to facilitate your own healing.
I had a doctor tell me I would be disabled IF I didn’t take a new drug. I didn’t feel aligned with that drug, and I trusted my body for leading me. So I said no. Trust that your body is actually leading you. Once you tap into it, you can trust that your body will give you the answers as to what it needs. It’s all about being in relationship with your body and staying present.
Try self healing meditation techniques and affirmations
“What YOU say will BE!” Is an affirmation that came to me the day I got back from Gabby Bernstein’s Spirit Junkie Masterclass in the fall of 2018.
“What YOU say will Be” is a powerful affirmation. It's a new belief system and a change in the way to approach things. It’s how I speak to my body and remind myself that I am constantly healing and in control.
Because as I always say, your cells are always listening to what you say, think, and feel. So when you listen to what your body needs then visualize positive and exciting things, you can create them.
What YOU say will BE! Say it now outloud: “What I Say Will Be!”
Keep visioning newness. Keep speaking kindly to your body and your symptoms. Thank your body for working with and FOR you! You’ve got this!
